Can You Mix Family and Business?

by AgentBlogBuzz.com

ham lake real estate agentsSome people think bringing family members into your real estate business affairs makes about as much sense as trying to mix water and oil. Personal and family problems might seep into your business dealings, and business difficulties could potentially sour what might be perfectly happy and healthy family relationships. Some folks think that your family might end up as dysfunctional as JR Ewing’s clan on the 80’s nighttime soap opera “Dallas.”

Pat Schleeter and Tim Arntzen are two Anoka County real estate agents who have proven that the conventional wisdom about mixing family and business “ain’t necessarily so,” as Cab Calloway used to sing. This dynamic partnership is actually involves an “in-law” partnership. Tim is married to Pat’s daughter.

If you are selling Anoka County real estate, you benefit from two seasoned agents with two different skill-sets and a cross-generational team that can relate to potential buyers of all ages. Also, there are two separate referral bases and spheres of influence, so the chance that they will have a ready-made prospect has doubled. If you are selling an Anoka county home, there is a strong possibility that Pat or Tim already know someone who would make a great buyer for your home. If you are looking for a home, there is a good likelihood that they know a prospective seller who has an ideal property for you. It’s a “two-for-one” value, meaning you get double exposure, guaranteed backup coverage, and a wider perspective of Anoka County real estate market dynamics. If “two heads are better than one,” why not get two veteran real estate agents for the price of one?

Another value-added benefit of this arrangement is the advantage of thirty years of combined real estate experience in Anoka County. Both have been working with Independent Brokers Realty since the early 1990’s. If you have been in the business for this long, you have probably encountered every type of buyer, every type of real estate transaction, and every type of challenge. Between the two of them, they certainly have seen everything. Benefit from the knowledge and experience of two separate agents.

How do they manage to keep family affairs from interfering with business? How do they keep business concerns from disturbing family relations? What’s the secret?

There is no secret. According to Tim, they do talk about Anoka County real estate quite a bit during family functions, but the just seem to naturally know where to draw the line.

Come to think of it, there are plenty of successful family businesses. Kevin and Linda Sharkey are able to successfully manage Independent Brokers Realty, even though they are married. The Rockefeller/Standard Oil company was a family run business, and they dominated that market for generations. Then, of course, there is the Forbes business dynasty, the Kennedy and Bush political dynasties, and Hugh Hefner’s successful Playboy empire, which owes much to the business talents of his daughter.

Perhaps some of these family-operated entities have had some difficulties or challenging dynamics. These are more prevalent where the individual members are unprincipled or dishonest. In any business, if you lose core values like honesty, life becomes complicated very quickly, and ALL relationships become compromised. After that, you will not be selling many Minnesota homes. Because Tim and Pat base their business philosophy on honesty, integrity, and generosity, the family relationships and business relationships can remain simple, transparent, and positive.
